May
1st benefit to help mother with
medical bills
|
|
Our wonderful
mother, Diane Shea, has supported us through each and every day
of our lives and we would now like to ask for your assistance as
we attempt to return that favor in her time of need. Mom, who
has been diagnosed with acute renal failure and endures
thrice-weekly dialysis treatments, is struggling to pay mounting
medical bills that are not covered by health insurance.
We hope after reading this letter you will consider
helping us help our mother by supporting a benefit that will
take place from 2 to 5 p.m. on Saturday, May 1 at the Community
Hose Fire Department of Clinton Heights at 65 Sherwood Avenue in
Rensselaer.
The health crisis that has taken such a toll on our
family began in October 2008 when our mother began treatment for
what was believed to be a simple case of high blood pressure.
When traditional treatments proved to be ineffective, more tests
were ordered. After numerous tests spanning many weeks, a large
blockage in her main aortic artery was eventually discovered.
Since this finding, our 42-year-old mother has had to
visit multiple specialists including cardiologists,
hematologists, urologists, renal and vascular specialists, and
others -- all searching to find a safe way to get rid of the
blockage. Three months ago, Mom was hospitalized with acute
renal failure. Dialysis treatments commenced, but two weeks
later, she developed what doctors believed to be an infection in
her dialysis port. This resulted in Mom being admitted to the
hospital and ultimately to seek highly specialized care at a
clinic in Cleveland.
Although Mom has insurance, co-pays, prescriptions and
the seemingly never-ending stream of treatments and related
travel expenses have become overwhelming.
It is important to us for people to know that our mother
has always been a hard working individual who never asked anyone
for financial assistance while struggling to raise the three of
us as a single parent. In fact, Mom used to attend evening
classes at Siena College after a full day at work so she would
one day have a better job. Her fortitude and perseverance paid
off when she earned her accounting degree and was named Chief
Financial Officer at the River Ridge Nursing Home in Amsterdam.
Thanks to the kindness of her employer, Mom has been
able to work from home in Cohoes when she isn’t feeling well and
to fit her hours around dialysis treatments. In all, she has
missed only about four weeks of work throughout her lengthy
ordeal.
Adult admission to the
fundraiser for our mother is $20 at the door or $17 in advance.
Children under 12 are free. |
